With Election Season over, a sense of normalcy can be ushered in again. But can it? So many issues lie in the wake of Election '08 that has made this country volatile of combustion. What could I be talking about since we elected a president who will bring us together?
He will bring those together who want to be united. For instance the "redneck right," those who are proud owners the Confederate flag and their .22 Rifle named "Betsy," are not entirely excited about being united with the "Ellen left," those who chain themselves to trees and follow rainbows.
Then what will happen if the extremes cannot come together? Nothing, the extremists will stay where they are and continue to stretch the outer rims of our country when we are in a tumultuous time.
Well, then what do I suggest? What should we do? The answer is relatively simple. Ignore the extremists. Look, Proposition 8 passed, gay community. You need to move on, not hold demonstrations in the streets. I understand you are angry, but gay marriage is not an issue everyone harmoniously desires. So what do you do in the meantime? Stop making us in the middle who lean to the left become doomed by your extreme agenda, for one. We have an economy to restore, Iraq to end, government corruption to squash, and bin Laden to kill. Not to mention a country to run, so I am sorry to say that your agenda goes to the back burner, as it should.
To those on the extreme right, get over it! You lost by....a lot! Your eight years of rule is about to end come January, and your ultra-right agenda will not be heard. It is your side who entered this country into a war that appeared to have no end, a near economic disaster, and years of government corruption. So what do I suggest you do? The same thing you suggested to me eight years ago, get behind the president. When Gore conceded, no one tried to assassinate Bush, or do anything ridiculous such as that. Obama needs your half-hearted devotion, at the most, because God knows that will be the most you could ever give to your president.
Extremists simply prove my opinion on them. They are intolerant, unable to compromise, and very divisive. How can we, as a people and a country, move forward? How are we able to accomplish anything without some sort of common ground? It is impossible. So go ahead extremists, continue your demonstrations about Prop 8 and abortion. Because in your mind, that is the only thing that matters. Whereas in a grownups mind, extremists take a back seat, and we talk about issues that will help everyone; not just you.

You want to know why we're so up in arms about these issues? Hear about the two elderly men murdered in Indianapolis because they were gay? No? Didn't think so because only one news station covered it. It was an obvious hate crime where they had been harrassed for weeks beforehand, and their door spray-painted with the word 'faggot.'
Extremist? No. I believe in equality. It isn't just a little issue. Marriage isn't the only thing we are after. Hate crimes against the gay community are up. Sitting on our hands and pretending everything is fine to focus on more world wide issues isn't going to do a damn thing. They're going to be against us no matter what we do. Abortion rights are being fucked over in Arizona as we speak. Are those important to me? You better believe it.
They would be to you if you had worked with young girls that were abused and wanted to kill themselves because they found themselves pregnant. It might be a big issue to you then if you actually opened up your eyes beyond global issues.
Yeah, those are important and I'm equally as passionate about those being solved. But I'm not going to compromise my other beliefs to make those "in the middle" happy.
Equality and human rights are important, believe it or not. I'm not an extremist. I just care about people. Believe it or not. The protests against prop 8 didn't hurt you or anyone. People were upset. They wanted to bond together. I went to a rally, and it was full of lovely people fighting for a cause. It wasn't anger. It was just a hope for what we believe in and know is right to someday become a reality.
I realize that you wrote this quite a few months ago, but it upsets me that people who believe in things don't want to shake things up because of "bigger issues." Fuck that. It's 2009, and still people in this country can't marry or be who they want to be because of someone ELSE'S beliefs?
Sorry, but that is a pretty damn big issue to me.
